Earthquake Rattles Eastern U.S. and This Programmer
Just before 2 PM, August 23, 2011: An earthquake shook a large area of eastern U.S., from Georgia to New England. The epicenter was in central Virginia. It is a very unusual event in this area. Luckily, the tremor was not a damaging one.
I was in front of my computer, programming new software, applying new algorithms. So, I was really absorbed in my activity. All of a sudden, I felt a shock. It sounded like a truck hit the house. I can hear similar sounds when the occupants downstairs drag or drop heavy objects. This time it was a little scary as I felt a shock.
The tremor lasted for 2 or 3 seconds. I didn’t even have time to leave my chair, let alone leave my apartment. But it was a very unpleasant event! Makes you wonder what RANDOMNESS can do at any time . . .
Then, I opened my Facebook. I saw a post by my daughter and a link to a Lady Gaga song. What an incredible coincidence — that song and today’s earthquake!

Ion Saliu,
Shaken but not shocked
